CHIN RIDGE SEEDS - MAY 2026
Enjoying Spring Birds
By Myrna Pearman, Mother Nature’s Naturalist and Backyard Birding Expert
May in Ontario is a special time of year. Not only are the trees and shrubs flush with blossoms, but the beauty of early spring flowers also brightens up even the rainiest spring day.
While the backyard birds that patronized your feeding stations all winter are now supplementing their diets with insects, nectar and blossoms, many species will still come into a feeding station for a quick snack.
While you might want to reduce the number of feeders you have out, I still recommend offering sunflower chips and finch blends from hopper or tube feeders. You could also continue scattering a bit of millet and sunflower chips on the ground, especially where the seeds can be protected from the weather (e.g., under a deck or balcony).
If you haven’t already put out your hummingbird feeder, now is a good time to make sure you put one up and keep it topped up with fresh nectar (1 parts white sugar to 4 parts water).
Also, if you haven’t finished planting your flower beds, check out local greenhouses for plants that will attract birds and/or pollinators. Even containers with suitable plants will be appreciated by your backyard neighbours.
May is also a great time to get out beyond your own backyard and explore the magic of bird migration and the upcoming nesting season. If you haven’t already downloaded eBird, be sure to get that app on your phone so you can learn to identify your local birds by sound. You might also want to watch feeder cams that have been set up around the province.
If you aren’t comfortable going out on your own, join a local birding group or nature club outing. The best way to learn about birds (and bird books, binoculars etc.) is from experienced naturalists who know their birds by sight/sound. Birders are more than happy to share their knowledge and experience with newcomers. Check out the Nature Ontario website for a list of birding groups, nature clubs, and interesting bird-related events in your area.
Enjoy May!
